What the BIBLE says about DEATH:

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. 1 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting.2

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.3 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever.  Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.4

To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life.5 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.6 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.7  For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.8

"You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman.9   (Jesus said) “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.10

Look on me and answer, O LORD my God.  Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death.11  And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.12

And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.13  So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.14  Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day…For David did not ascend into the heavens…20  So, Daniel, be faithful until the end! You will rest, and at the end of time, you will rise from death to receive your reward.15

These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”  Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.” However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep.  Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.”16

Then he (Stephen) knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.17

(Jesus said) “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with Me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.”18  For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.

19  Your dead shall live; Together with my dead body they shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; For your dew is like the dew of herbs, And the earth shall cast out the dead. 21

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.22  And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, 40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.23

But man dies and is laid away; Indeed he breathes his last and where is he?  As water disappears from the sea, and a river becomes parched and dries up, So man lies down and does not rise.  Till the heavens are no more, they will not awake nor be roused from their sleep.  For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.25

For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.26

If a  man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come. Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.27  If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness.28  Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?29

For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.30

Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.31

(Paul says):  For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.32

Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”

Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”33

This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.  And this is the will of Him who sent Me, … that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Jesus therefore answered and said to them, “…No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”34

For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun.35

His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.36

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.37  The dead do not praise the LORD, nor any who go down into silence.38  For in death there is no remembrance of You; in the grave who will give You thanks?39

For Sheol cannot thank You, death cannot praise You; those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth. 19 The living, the living man, he shall praise You, as I do this day…40  While I live I will praise the LORD; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.41  Will You work wonders for the dead? Shall the dead arise and praise You?  Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in the place of destruction?  12 Shall Your wonders be known in the dark?  And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?42  The dead shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.43

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.44  SOUL = nephesh (Hebrew) = psuche   (Greek) = person/being/life/creature

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (being).45

Or if a soul touch any unclean thing...he also shall be unclean, and guilty.  The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean ...unless he wash his flesh with water ...and the soul that eateth of it shall bear his iniquity.  But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice ...having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

...the soul that shall touch any unclean thing... and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings... even that soul shall be cut off from his people.  For whosoever eateth the fat of the beast...even the soul that eateth it shall be cut off from his people... No soul of you shall eat blood, ... every soul that eateth that which died of itself, ...he shall both wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean.46 Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine; the soul who sins shall die.47  (‘Souls’ can evidently touch, wash, eat, bathe and die—because SOULS ARE PEOPLE.)

...he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein... and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day...48(Souls can be destroyed.)

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.  26For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?49  (Matthew wrote ‘psuche’ four times; it was translated ‘life’ twice and ‘soul’ twice.)

“... eight souls were saved by water....”50 And God created great whales, and every living creature [living soul] that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.  And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature [living soul] after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.51 (Modern translations use ‘lives’ or ‘persons’.)  Nephesh chayyah” meaning “living soul” is also applied to animals.

For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath (ruach); so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. 20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.  (‘Breath’ often translated ‘Spirit’ from Hebrew ‘ruach’ or Greek ‘pneuma’.  Meaning ‘breath’, ‘ghost’, or ‘wind’.)52

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit (breath) shall return unto God who gave it.53  And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.54...“Touch Me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father…”55  (The spirit does not indicate the person, or personhood, but the person's life force or breath.)

“The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”56     “The wages of sin is death.”57 And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.58

“Let no one be found among you…who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.  Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”59  Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.60  When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?61  I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people.62  But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.  And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.63

Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory."  Where, O death, is your victory?  Where, O death, is your sting?"64

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.65  But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.66

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And SO we will be with the Lord forever.67

(Paul said): “For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure.  I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.68

(Jesus said) “I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go I will come again and receive you unto Myself, that where I am there ye may be also.”71
